The battle of rest against the heat
Summer is here and with it comes endless nights, sheets clinging to the body and tossing and turning in bed looking for the coolest corner of the mattress. Sound familiar? You are not alone.
Heat is one of the biggest enemies of a good night's sleep. And it's not just us: recent studies show that high night-time temperatures directly affect the quality of sleep, increasing the time it takes to fall asleep and reducing the most restorative phases.
Today we tell you how the heat affects your sleep, why natural materials are your allies and how you can sleep better in summer without losing sustainability.
The heat "deconfigures" your sleep
When we sleep, our body needs to lower its internal temperature to enter a state of deep rest. But... what happens when the room is 27°C?
This happens:
🔥 More night-time awakenings. A global study by the University of Copenhagen revealed that just raising the night-time temperature by one degree can lead to up to 25% more sleep interruptions.
🔥 Less deep sleep. Heat reduces the NREM and REM phases, which are the most important for you to feel really rested the next day. In other words: you sleep, but you don't rest.
🔥 More time awake. On hot nights, we move more, wake up more and find it harder to get back to sleep.
🔥 Worse mood on waking. Yes, there is a scientific basis for a rude awakening in summer. Lack of restful sleep affects mood and performance.
The heat literally "throws off" the natural sleep cycle. And the worst thing is that you often don't even realise it: you wake up more tired but you don't know why.
Global Ecosome: heat affects everyone
Hot nights are not just your problem, heatwaves collectively affect the sleep quality of millions of people. Recent research shows that climate change could increase global sleep loss by up to 50 hours per person per year if we don't act. Poor sleep doesn't just affect productivity or mood: it also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and mental health problems.
That's why sustainable solutions like natural mattresses are not only good for you, but also for the planet.
Why a natural mattress can help you?
At Wonderflip we know for sure: natural materials are the key to sleeping better in summer. Here we explain why:
Real breathability
Mattresses made of synthetic materials such as foam or viscoelastic tend to accumulate heat. Natural latex and vegetable fibres, on the other hand, allow air to circulate better.
👉 Result: less "sticky" feeling and more freshness all night long.
Moisture evaporation
Cotton and natural wool are not only breathable: they absorb moisture and release it quickly. So if you sweat, your mattress doesn't turn into a sauna at night.
Less retained heat
Natural materials do not store heat like synthetic materials. That means they don't give you back that "oven effect" when you turn over in bed.
At Wonderflip we use: natural latex and organic cotton. All designed for you to rest fresh, in a sustainable and chemical-free way.
Tips to sleep better in summer (without losing eco-style)
🌿 Keep the room between 18°C and 20°C. Yes, we know, it's difficult, but it's the ideal temperature. Use fans and ventilate in the morning.
🌿 Shutters down, freshness up. Close curtains or blinds during the day so that the sun doesn't turn your room into an oven.
🌿 Warm shower, not freezing. It helps to lower your body temperature. Very cold water has the opposite effect: your body will try to warm up.
🌿 Cotton or linen sheets. Natural fabrics are your best allies against the heat.
🌿 Light clothing. Or without clothes. We don't judge here 😉.
