Complete guide to washing your pillows and ensuring healthy sleep
Pillows are essential elements for our rest and well-being, as they provide us with the support we need to enjoy a good night's sleep. However, over time, they accumulate sweat and body oils, mites and other impurities that can negatively affect the quality of our sleep and, more importantly, our health. That is why it is crucial to incorporate regular washing of pillows into our personal care routine.
How often should we wash our pillows?
Before we talk about washing methods, it is essential to understand the importance of maintaining our clean pillows. It is recommended to wash them at least twice a year, or more frequently if you suffer from allergies. This habit will not only prolong the life of your pillows, but also ensure a healthier sleeping environment.
Washing methods:
The choice between hand or machine washing depends on the type of pillow you have and the manufacturer's instructions.
- Hand wash:
- Fill a large bowl with warm water and add a mild detergent.
- Immerse the pillow, pressing gently to allow the water and detergent to penetrate the fibres.
- Gently scrub the dirtiest areas with a soft bristle brush.
- Rinse the pillow repeatedly until the water runs clear.
- Drain off excess water and air dry.
- Machine wash:
- Make sure the pillow is machine washable (check labels).
- Use a mild detergent and select a delicate wash cycle.
- Do not overload the washing machine to ensure effective washing.
- Select an additional rinse cycle to remove any detergent residue.
Types of pillows and how to wash them:
Pillows come in a variety of materials, and each requires a specific approach to washing.
Feather or down pillows:
Make sure the pillow is machine washable, as natural feather pillows cannot be washed.
Use a mild detergent and air dry pillows to keep them fluffy.
Viscoelastic foam pillows:
They are not suitable for washing machines.
Clean stains with a damp cloth without soaking the core and use a pillow protector to prevent dirt build-up.
Latex pillows:
Clean with a damp cloth and avoid contact with excessive water to maintain the integrity of the material.

Flake pillows:
In general, most flake pillows are machine washable. Before washing, remove the cover and gently shake the pillow to remove any loose residue. Use a mild detergent and select a gentle cycle with warm water.
Add a few tennis balls or dryer balls during the cycle to help keep the flakes fluffy.
After washing, be sure to rinse them thoroughly and squeeze them gently to remove excess water. To dry, lay them on a flat surface and let them air dry or use a tumble dryer on a low setting.
